The interview of the Delhi Rapists shocked the whole country, especially the educated middle class people. The disgusting statements and the sick mentality conveyed by the rapists along with their lawyers in order to justify the inhuman crime outraged any sensible liberal thinking mind in the country. But amusingly the media and some liberal persons were more outraged by the ban imposed on the documentary in India. Almost all the media houses went berserk against the government and held talkshows (shouting marathons), where educated, well to do intellectuals lambasted the government. Their argument was that the Government was infringing on their right to expression and choice. But they forgot the fact that the government represents the whole country and has to take a decision for the larger good of the masses. Rape happens due to the ultra conservative and sexist mindset of the people. To stop rape we have to change the prevailing mindset. In an open and modern society the documentary would have had positive effects on the people. But in the rural or semi urban patriarchal society which is based on regressive and ultra conservative mindset, the documentary would have just strengthened their views. The documentary would have elicited comments like “sahi kiya hai” or “they (rapist) did the right thing” in many of the households under the khap panchayats or in rural backward areas where things like honour killing and subjugation of women is common. If you want to change the views of the naxals you don’t make them read Mao or Lenin. Similarly if you want our khap panchayats or ultra conservative and sexist people to change their mindset you don’t make them watch the sick views of the Delhi rapists. People should understand that it is not the educated media persons, intellectuals and social science students alone that make up India but millions of poor farmers, rickshaw drivers and people from our villages and towns that make up this vast Nation and many among them are illiterate or only literate enough to put their own signature thanks to our literacy programs. The media which censored the word haramzyada in the footage of the shadvi’s comment suddenly talks against banning a documentary which to me manifested some views which are even worse than that of the shadvi’s. Why this hypocrisy? Why they did not think about the right of freedom of speech and choice during reporting on Shadhvi’s comment? It was because the statement and the word could have heightened the communal tension in the country or could have offended a large section of the people. Similarly in the case of India’s daughter, which is a well made documentary but may have had negative consequences on the mindset of a large section of our population, the government was wise enough to ban it for the larger good of the society and the people of this country as a whole.

The recent notice given to Sakhshi Maharaj by the Government is a welcome sign. These religious chauvinists were taking away the spotlight from the government’s developmental agendas.People voted Modi because of his developmental track records. His nationalist stance also gave him votes. But the religious bigots in BJP-the so called ‘sants’, ‘maharajs’ and sadhvis, and their comments literally hijacked the headlines. The good work done by the government were getting overshadowed by these stupid statements. The government should take strong actions against these so called holy men and women.Groups like VHP and Bajrang dals- which have not so good relations with Modi should be reined in and strong actions should be taken against their provocative statements and actions.
