A resume could be your pass to the company of your dream – in a case it is going to be read. If a resume is labeled as a not noticeable enough at the very first look, the rest has no sense. In this case, an employer will never know about your great experience, impressive accomplishments, and the remarkable charisma.
There are a few issues about a resume that could put an end to a candidate’s efforts to be considered as an applicant worth attention. Some of the peeves are about formatting the resume while others are about content and general style.
The resume is a kind of a ‘childish’
Don’t be confused by the examples of the creative resumes flashing before your eyes when you’re looking for an inspiration and advice on the Internet.
A creative resume is an additional factor for grabbing the employer’s attention. The basic tool is a ‘classic’ resume – the document that follows the rules. It means that the right resume complies with requirements: it has the solid structure, contains all the necessary information, looks formal, and written in business style. All that lies above this guiding line could help to seal the deal – or cause its break.
So, be careful with the creative elements in a resume. Definitely, you should avoid using such moves as placing to the resume the pictures of the kitties, the flowers, the movie characters, etc. – even if it seems to you that your vision of the resume to this particular vacancy is impressive.
Your resume should present you as a professional that is confident, steady, and mature. As you might have guessed, the ‘kitty style’ is not the best option to hit the target.
The resume isn’t readable
We bet it will never come to your mind to propose a recruiter to sit on the chair that stays upside down. Why do some of the employees write the resume that is extremely uncomfortable to read? The question has no answer. Don’t be like this sort of the applicants and make your resume comfortable for reading, understanding, and searching for the information.
– organizing information with blocks: One block is an entire portion of the data about one particular topic (a job position, a set of skills, a goal, etc.). Let the text ‘breathe’: Leave the empty lines between the blocks. Don’t try to pack to the document as much information as you can. The success is not about the quantity, but the quality;
– using the ‘décor’ (fonts, colors, visual elements) reasonably. The rule is not more than 3 fonts and 2 colors. Think about how to impress an employer with your achievements, not the tricks with a format,
– not using the professional vocabulary too actively. Include in the resume the keywords – that’s how it works. But make the text absolutely clear to the reader.
The resume is standard
There are so much resume templates on the Internet that writing the resume isn’t a creative task anymore. You can take the template, change a few words and dates, and the work is done.
It’s easy, isn’t it? The truth is that following this strategy you make the typical document: Your personality isn’t visible here. The typical resume tells nothing about your unique career path, your experience, and your personal features. Do you want an employer to see you as a ‘typical’ applicant? If not, tailor the resume to the vacancy. Use the job description to identify the most important issues worth mentioning and highlighting. Remember that an employer is interested to know not only about the set of functions you are able to perform. He/she is interested to see your personality as well: Your motivation, your manner to communicate, what you do when you face the problem, etc. Your resume should be special for every single employer.
The resume is cheating
Nobody is delighted by dealing with a person who is insincere and trying to hide something. The same applies to the recruiters’ impression about the applicants.
If you have some weak points in your career, the better way is not to hide them but to explain.
For example, if you have the gaps in your career mention this fact in the cover letter and give the reason. Then show that you weren’t standing still while being out of a job. List the courses you were attending that time, the volunteer projects you took part at, and the work you performed as a freelancer. That’s the way to build the trust between you and an employer while cheating is a dead end.
