Flawless India to face Champions Trophy 2017 final against Pakistan i.indiaopines.com

After a nail-biting display of events during the game against England to book their place on the final greenfield, Pakistan is now set to face India at the Oval.

On what seemed like an almost impossible feat, Pakistan outwitted the English legends on what seemed like a miracle performed by Sarfraz Ahmed. India on the other hand, as led by Virat Kohli bowled out Bangladesh for 267 and had 9 more wickets to spare.

When asked about Sunday’s game however, Virat Kohli announces that he is not thinking about that yet. He is thinking things through one step at-a-time. He claims that nothing much is to be changed with their strategy, they will begin with slow turns on the grass to pick up momentum and roughed it up mid-way with their reverse swing-bowlers.

Anil Kumble claims that scoring against Pakistan will not be difficult as he has one of the best batsman in Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli, an incomparable all round in Ravindra Jadeja, and a strong arm bowler in Bhuvaneswar Kumar. All these are essential to winning Sunday’s game.

Pakistan on the other hand, plans to execute the same finesse that they displayed against England. Hasan ali, who is Umar Akmal’s replacement says that he is confident that they will perform well against their rival. He is confident with their strong-willed pitchers and bowlers, and with Hafeez on their team, having scored 77 balls in their win against England, will do well on the field. Sarfraz Ahmed, Pakistan Team Captain says that they only need to do what they have to do on the grass, nothing else. “If they do what we’ve been trained to do, and do it well, the odds will on our favor come Sunday, for now, I have to get my team to rest to prepare for that.”

Canada and Europian fans will be able to get on this action on Sunday for the Ind vs Pak final Live streaming straight from the Oval field on YuppTV.

The last time England toured India (in 2012) for a Test series it was billed as a revenge series after India had plummeted to lowly depths of a 0-4 loss in England just months prior to the beginning of that series. England, then, grounded India into dust at their home with Cook, Trott and Pietersen playing the key roles in negating India’s spin threat. England came unscathed with a 2-1 victory against a strong Indian side in their own backyard. India visited England again in 2014 and were bashed comprehensively once again with Kohli having a horrid tour as India capitulated against both the swing of Anderson and the guile of an unsuspecting Moeen Ali. England were victorious again by a 3-1 margin.

While cricket continues to be quite popular in India; its popularity definitely has declined; – and declined significantly. Why so?

Jadeja is India's most lethal weapon: Paul Harris

Paul Harris was never an orthodox left-arm spinner. The former South Africa spinner was defensive in his approach and would often be criticised for not flighting the ball enough. With the South African team management soon preferring other spinners to Harris, the 37-year-old saw his career ending prematurely. Following a similar approach is Ravindra Jadeja, who also bowls flat, wicket-to-wicket and rarely flights the ball.

While there have been a few detractors, Harris says he is extremely impressed with the 27-year-old left-arm spinner’s performance.

“I am really impressed with the way he operates. He has his limitations but what amazes me is the way he tries to excel in those limitations. He varies his pace and the ball that skids on can really catch the batsmen by surprise. His slower one can also deceive batsmen. In the end, he is giving results and that’s what matters for India,” Harris, who is playing for Gemini Arabians in the inaugural Masters Champions League (MCL) in Dubai, told TOI.

India’s triumph in the recent Twenty20 International series against Australia was largely due to the efforts of their batsmen. With India hosting the ICC World Twenty20 next month, the form of their batsmen will be crucial. Harris, though, feels it will be the bowlers who will give India the edge over others. “Spin holds the key and India have the best spinners at the moment. Ravichandran Ashwin is the No. 1 spinner in the world now and knows the conditions like the back of his hand. So is Jadeja.

“Not only his bowling, his fielding will also help India’s cause. He can also score valuable runs while coming at No. 7 or 8. Jadeja is India’s most lethal weapon and has a great influence on the side,” said Harris.

Harris feels while India will bank on spinners, South Africa will need their pacers to fire upfront.

“See, xcept Imran Tahir, we don’t have quality spinners. So we will need our pacers, especially Dale Steyn, to fire. It is unfortunate that Steyn has picked up an injury now. Hopefully, he will be ready in time for the tournament. Otherwise, Morne Morkel, Kagiso Rabada and Kyle Abbott need to step up. We have won the T20 and ODI series against India in India last year and it should hold us in good stead,” Harris concluded.

Mathematical Suggestions to the Duckworth Lewis Rain Method In Cricket ijirset.com

submitted 2 years ago by in Cricket

Read/Discuss. Details
Article Details

In a report published on May 16, 2015, Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody has expressed unhappiness at the way the target for Royal Challengers Bangalore was revised under the Duckworth/Lewis method in their rain-interrupted IPL cricket match and said that the system ‘needs to be looked at’. Moody is still disillusioned how D/L method comes up with the numbers that they come up with. V Jayadevan reviews the changes made in the D/L method and feels to the extent that the revised method is equally defective. The VJD method brings out the ‘phases’ of runs scoring as divided between certain overs in the full 20 or 50 over match. But, it would be better to attempt the partition of 90 runs. This would make the live scorecard data behave like ‘remainders’. Each batsman’s scoring can be picked out individually then, and use it for target resetting in case the match is hampered by rain, the overs have been  reduced.

Till the end of August 2012, the D/L method has been used in 189 T20 matches, of which 181 have produced a result. Of these, 90 have been won by Team 1, 84 by Team 2 and 7 have been tied. But, in most of the matches, the target is mathematically off track, they are not congruent to the batsman’s scoring sample. Congruence is the most vital thing need in any/each kind of equation.

The incidence of cricket match interrupted due to rains are increasing over the years, so the matter is serious. Duckworth and Lewis have collected the T20 data, ODI data related with International matches only, leaving out the domestic t20 series which are over 500 in count every year. They are reluctant in incorporating the data of domestic t20 cups, namely, the Indian Premier League, Ram Slam challenge, Big Bash, Bangladesh Premier League, Haier Cup, Caribbean Premier League and others. But at the same time, enforcing their D/L target on these matches too.

The cricket community is feeling the need for a correction, few changes in the D/L method. Nobody has yet come out with a single solution, common to t20 data and ODI data, feeling that a ‘single’ solution is not possible. It is not so, a simple research tells us that an integer partition of the form ‘90n + 30’  is common to t20 and ODI data, it has been presented in this paper.

And further, this paper traces similar kind of ‘integer partition’ in all the cricket scores with 90n acting as the anchor points. Then, in the next section, which is the core of our methodology, we re-group the data in the live scorecard, add the balls faced count to the runs count of each wicket batsman. Through this we establish an indisputable existence of linear congruence between the batsman’s data and the team total score. Immediately follows the mathematical suggestions to the D/L method. The paper further explains in details point wise modifications to various aspects of the method. These integer based suggestions have been developed to be presented for consideration by the ICC review committee.

IPL 2016 is nearing, this can be the perfect platform to get involved with these congruences checks, testing the winning method based of the first innings total, and of course the target resetting in the correct manner.

Ajinkya Rahane: A national treasure that needs to be protected i.indiaopines.com

submitted 2 years ago by in Cricket

Read/Discuss. Details
Article Details

Ajinkya Rahane has quickly metamorphosed himself to be a man for all seasons. Adored and respected by all and sundry, Rahane has learnt it the hard, gruelling way. On the sidelines for a real long time with Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid holding fort for the country, Rahane endured protracted period of frustration waiting in the sidelines on the 2011-12 tour of Australia. He had lingered for a couple of months without a single outing. He also had to do the hard part, waiting for 16 months — from the time he was roped in the Test scheme of things in November 2011 to the time he finally got capped in March 2013. [Also Read: Ridiculous to make Ajinkya Rahane sacrificial lamb to protect holy cow Rohit Sharma]

Unsuccessful in his first Test at Feroz Shah Kotla on a tricky, wicked track did not help his cause. Rohit Sharma was backed instead and he capitalised with consecutive tons against the West Indies in the winters of 2013. That temporarily fizzled out Rahane’s chances.  At such a juncture anyone’s patience could have snapped. But Rahane had immense self-belief. He slogged it out in the nets, worked doubly hard and reaped dividends. With Tendulkar’s calling it a day, Rahane got another look-in which he cashed. [Also Read: Ajinkya Rahane should be groomed to be Virat Kohli’s deputy]

He scored 96 against the South African pace battery. He accentuated it with a few away hundred against the Kiwis in February 2014 and finally transformed into being a mainstay in Australia 2013-14. He and Kohli teamed up to play some breathtaking knocks; he also saved a Test at Sydney. Rahane is also a very safe catcher at slip, much like his mentor Rahul Dravid, and his world record catches recently is a possibly pointer of things to come.

For all his prove worth to the team, Rahane is the go-to man for anything others in the team won’t do or would prefer not to do —  much like Dravid was asked to. To protect the holy cows in the team, Rahane has been moved up and down the Indian batting order. But, like a true champion, he has delivered.

Rahane hit a purple patch both against South Africa and the Kiwis, slamming a hundred and a fifty in Wellington and Durban, respectively. Rahane was one of the few Indian batsmen to score quality runs on the tour of England in 2014. He tackled James Anderson & Co. very wisely and also scored a match-winning ton on a green top at Lord’s. Rahane had an impressive 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, during which he registered a gem of a hundred at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He scored 399 runs in the four-match Test series. [Also Read: Ajinkya Rahane’s world record: How He Achieved It]

It’s time for the Team India management to treat Rahane like a treasure that he is and not destroy his career with callous treatment. Rahane is indeed a national treasure that we need to protect.

(A cricket geek to the tee, Ankit Banerjee smokes and snorts it all day long. The romance with the sport incepted since the 1996 World Cup semi-final. He is a winner of the 2011 edition of the All-India college cricket quiz.)

Clarke and Sangakkara: How they compare when weighed by numbers i.indiaopines.com

submitted 2 years ago by in Cricket

Read/Discuss. Details
Article Details

The retirements of Michael Clarke and Kumar Sangakkara in quick succession has left a huge hole in international cricket in terms of proven class. [Also Read: Kumar Sangakkara: The most prolific batsman in 21st century]

There are, however, striking dissimilarities in the two retirements. Sangakkara went out when his cricketing stocks were still high. On the other hand, Clarke found his batting form had deserted him. The loss of Ashes against expectations made him take the honourable route to the exit than being asked to go. [Also Read: Michael Clarke: 31 memorable moments from his illustrious international career]

For Clarke, talent was never an issue but an ailing chronic back injury was. He was a master at playing spin. The way he batted in is debut Test at Bangalore in 2004, spoke volumes of his class. He smothered the spin by coming down the track and used the depth of his crease to cut. Proof of his prowess against spin is his record against the sub continental teams: 42 Tests (against India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan) and scored 3380 at an average of 51.21. [Also Read: Kumar Sangakkara gets emotional during his retirement speech]

In a Test career, spanning almost 11 years, he scored 8643 runs from 115 Tests at an excellent average of 49.10 with 28 hundreds.

Unlike Clarke, Sangakkara was in sublime form in the last couple of years. In 16 Tests since 2014, Sangakkara scored 1843 runs at 61.43, slamming five hundreds. He finished as the fifth highest run-getter in Tests, amassing 12,400 runs from 134 matches with 38 centuries. He also plundered four back-to-back hundreds in the 2015 World Cup, another world record. [Also Read: Michael Clarke: The agonising final stretch]

Let’s glance at some fun facts about these two stalwarts whose exits left the game poorer.

1.  Clarke’s highest in Tests is an unbeaten 329 against India in 2012, while Sangakkara’s best in Test is 319 against Bangladesh in 2014. However, Sangakkara leaves Clarke far behind in scoring double hundreds. Sangakkara has a whopping 11, just one short of Bradman, compared to Clarke’s four.

2.  In the fourth innings Tests, Sangakkara enjoys a batting average of 41.53 with two hundreds from 34 outings. While Clarke has scored runs at 31.90 getting a solitary hundred.

3.  Clarke has starred in 64 wins for Australia. And in those wins, his average 55.67 with 17 hundreds. Sangakkara has played in 54 wins for Sri Lanka, averages 71.69 in them and has 19 hundreds to his credit.

4.  In the 15 Tests that Sangakkara has captained, he has scored 1601 runs at 69.60. While Clarke in 47 Tests, averages close to 51.92. However, as a skipper, Clarke has won more accolades.

Each has had different tales, but love for the game is what united them and brought them under the same roof and got them to overhaul the challenges. Their place among the pantheons of greats is assured.

Time for Ravi Shastri to deliver www.criclife.com

Ankit Banerjee dwells into Ravi Shastri and his KRAs following India’s loss in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle.

As the last nail in the Indian coffin was hammered at Galle, the cameras panned on the legend Kumar Sangakkara. At 37, playing his final Test at Galle, Sangakkara shot off the blocks for a 100 metres dash to be with his teammates. He was just handed a fabulous parting gift—an epic Sri Lankan victory that is now likened to the one India scored over Australia at Kolkata in 2001. [Also Read: Rohit Sharma squanders another opportunity; Cheteshwar Pujara best fit for No 3 slot]

The Riplesque act was largely made possible by Dinesh Chandimal, who was Sri Lanka’s VVS Laxman in the second innings. And, of course, Rangana Herath who cast a magical spell like Harbhajan did against Australia at Kolkata.

The Indians spoke of aggressive and fearless cricket going into the Test. India’s second innings run-rate of 2.24, in contrast to Sri Lanka’s 4.45 in the second innings, shows that the Indians did not translate their words into action. This is the same Sri Lankan side that lost to Pakistan very recently. Sri Lanka pressed for a win, while India were excessively defensive in their approach. The mindset Team India showed at Adelaide in December 2014 was missing. [Also Read: Will Shikhar Dhawan’s injury open the door for Gautam Gambhir?]

After losing night-watchman Ishant Sharma, India were two wickets down at 30 with 146 more runs to get. Rohit Sharma could have launched a counter-attack and taken the game by the scruff of its neck. For that matter, even Kohli could have been aggressive. But they were too dependent on standing firm on a pitch where the ball was turning square. Survival was tough and judicious attack was a wiser option. Once Rohit and Kohli fell, India were staring defeat in the face. [Also Read: Murali Vijay’s absence will hurt India in the first Test against Sri Lanka]

The questions that need to be asked: What is the role of the Team Director Ravi Shastri? Ravi Shastri doesn’t need to teach the boys how to wield the willow. The likes of Kohli, Rohit, Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan are accomplished batsmen on world stage. So, by the looks of it, Shastri is here to nurse their mental side of the game. Results, however, does not show him in good light.
A miserable one-day series in Bangladesh and now a lacklustre beginning to the Sri Lankan series, the Indians right haven’t really excelled under him. A galaxy of mistakes at Galle saw India lose, the goof-ups are being repeated and that is stressing out Indian cricket fans. Rohit has failed to evolve, Wriddhiman Saha has not learnt from his mistake at Adelaide and the top order, minus Murali Vijay, does not look good to counter a tricky situation upfront during a chase.

This team is brimming with potential. In conditions where the wicket offered copious spin from Day One, India had the machinery to take 20 wickets. Ravichandran Ashwin has the repertoire and has been in a zone. Amit Mishra can be a tormentor on a given day. Harbhajan Singh’s return added spice to the attack.

Decision Review System (DRS) would surely have won India the game, but that doesn’t solve the problems. It would be interesting to know how Cheteshwar Pujara feels when Shastri continues his praise of Rohit despite repeated failures. [Also Read: Enough of DRS drama; India now needs to look beyond]

Did Gary Kirsten have to enlighten the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly on how to bat? Maybe, Kirsten knew that there were things he could learn from these veterans. He was a better manager than a coach. And that is the need of the hour for this Indian team.

In an interview, Tendulkar once said that under Kirsten they had the belief of breaching the 400-run barrier as well. This is exactly what is expected from Shastri, give lesser interviews and concentrate more on the team, for the team. Kirti Azad got it spot on when he wrote: “Shastri is a great talker, but talking alone does not deliver results. It is not surprising why the cricketers want Shastri to continue as mentor-cum-coach instead of a hard taskmaster as coach. The stage was set by the players of the previous years.” [Also Read: Ravi Shastri talks; Rahul Dravid delivers]

Shastri might have all the support from Kohli, but the question that Indian cricket fans and followers are keen on is: When will he start delivering results?

VIRAT KOHLI ‘MENTALLY UNFIT’ FOR TOP-JOB ankitbanerjee.blogspot.in

submitted 2 years ago by in Cricket

Read/Discuss. Details
Article Details

Throughout the tour Australian Summer Down Under (Test, Tri-series and WC 2015), Virat Kohli looked like a player on a different zone and the entire team was playing catch-up. I could probably draw parallels between Kohli and Messi, both want to be showmen. Actually, it is a tricky situation. CR7 was a misfit according to some ManU players, because they could not play his brand of football, hence the team collapsed. Cricket, like football is a team sport and combining well the key to success.

Virat Kohli epitomizes the Delhi attitude on field. He is a true badass, on and off the field. During his press conference he throws his weight around, vows to sledge when the entire team wants to focus on the game. We are not Aussies, we are not traditional sledgers, then why try doing something we are not masters at.

On field he looks to pick up a fight at the drop of a hat. Cricket matches can never be won by sledging, that is not our strength and we should not focus on that. I agree MSD was defensive in his approach during the semis, but that is a part and parcel of the game. There are days when you are taking the right decisions and find yourself ruling the roost, but you do not look the change the entire psyche of the team.

Even the shot he played during the semis proved that he does not have the temperament for the biggest stage of it all. As a viewer you must have felt that it was an ego-shot that saw the back of Virat. At that crucial juncture, after you have been blessed with a solid start he should have been looking to milk his way in with singles and twos. The bouncer was heading away from Kohli towards first slip and you knw it is a high risk shot with high probability of a top edge, he should simply have avoided or ducked the bouncer. There is no place for ballooning egos in the gentleman’s game and next time he dons the tri-colour he should keep this at the back of his mind.

There were two or three incidents which were good enough to prove that Virat is not ready for the top job. The dressing room brawl with state-mate Shikhar Dhawan, then there was the Mitchell Johnson spat which created panic in the dressing room and the last and the ugliest the ‘foul-mouthed’ Kohli, remember the way Virat lambasted the innocent journalist. These should be reasons enough for the team management to realize MSD has to continue and Virat has to wait.

Cricket in India is already in thick soup with allegations and controversies flying left, right and centre which also means the future of the beautiful game is at stake. After swallowing all these I am sure BCCI will wait and watch before passing the mantle for the top job to Virat.

By skill standards the brash Delhi-ite is at MT. Everest, but to create a Sachin-like aura he has to mature and not play a kid whose candy has been whacked from underneath his pillow.
